Brooklyn Robbery Lawyer

Larceny, robbery and burglary charges can have a devastating effect on your ability to find a good job in the future, as few employers would want to hire someone who has a criminal record. Most of these crimes are charged as felonies, which would also cause you to lose certain rights if you plead guilty or are convicted, such as the right to own a firearm and to vote.

I am criminal defense attorney Wilson LaFaurie. My goal in any theft-related case is to protect you from the long-term consequences of a criminal conviction as well as the short-term consequences. From my law office in Brooklyn, I represent clients throughout the New York City area who face charges for:

  • Petit larceny, which in New York is defined as theft of property valued at less than $1,000, and grand larceny, which is theft of property valued at $1,000 or more. Petit larceny is a Class A misdemeanor and grand larceny is a felony.
  • Robbery, which is theft from a person based on the use of force or the threat of force
  • Armed robbery, which is robbery involving the use of a weapon. Even if you didn't have a weapon such as a gun, you could be charged with armed robbery if the victim thought you had one.
  • Burglary, which is breaking into a residence or a business to commit a crime such as larceny

A thorough investigation from a defense point of view is important in any criminal case. In one case, I represented a man who was accused of burglarizing a house. When I went to the lot where they had impounded my client's car, I found a toll receipt in the back seat that he didn't tell me about. The receipt showed that my client was in another state on the day of the burglary and couldn't have committed the crime.

Immigration consequences of a theft conviction: A felony theft charge is considered a "crime of moral turpitude" by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and could result in your deportation. It's important to understand the immigration consequences before you plead guilty to any criminal charges.
